The journey to the Big Apple was a long and strenuous one. These last couple of weeks have been an intense struggle to keep my life moving forward. God has kept me going though.
Sometimes I wonder how I even get by. This semester has kept me feeling so unmotivated, it's amazing what God has presented in front of me. Now that I have the semester finished up, I'm feeling refreshed and renewed to take on the tasks of this course.
So the journey started Friday night. I had just finished up my last exam. It was a French exam, a piece of French literature. We had to read through the story, translate and identify underlined verbs, and answer questions at the end. I finally finished it up just before midnight as I was also finishing moving all my stuff out of my apartment. It was a take home test, so it wasn't a huge stress. I drove it over to my professor's house and dropped it in his mailbox before leaving to go back to my dad's house. From there I would head to the airport.
Moving out was a whole other story. I put it off till the last day. My brother came up and helped me move the large stuff. It was nice, I got to have dinner with him and see my little nephew. I didn't get all my stuff moved out though until nearly 2 a.m. At which point I had to drive an hour and 10 minutes home. I haven't even packed yet for my morning flight. I decided t just get a couple hours of sleep before waking up to pack.
In the morning, I got up around 6 a.m. to meet my mom at the house. I began packing, thinking my flight didn't leave until 9:44. I had plenty of time to pack and get to the airport. This is where the day got tough. Once my mom arrived, my dad's dog had gotten out of his pen. I had to put him in the garage so he didn't run around. He was all muddy and jumped all over me. We finally got in the car and started heading towards the airport. I got a text message about a flight update. It turned out that the 9:44 flight was my connecting flight. My flight to Detroit actually left at 8:30. It was a race to the airport. Lucky for me, Grand Rapids airport isn't very busy.
Upon arriving at the airport, with about half an hour before boarding time, I realized that I didn't grab my wallet. I began to go into panic mode. My heart was racing, I frantically started to think of what to do. I thought for sure I wouldn't be allowed to get on the plane. There was definitely no time to go back. I started calling people, realizing it was futile. By the time we pulled into the parking lot, I took a breath and calmed myself down. I would just go in and explain my situation. God would take care of me. And he did.
The lady at the desk marked me for extra security checks. I got through security fine and made it to my gate with just enough time to use the restroom and board the plane. From there on, things went smoothly.
I met up with my cousin at the airport, and we proceeded to take the train from Newark, NJ into New York City. We picked up some genuine New York pizza and headed back to his apartment. I sat and relaxed with him and his girlfriend, and ate some of the best pizza I've ever had. After that, Julia, his girlfriend, took off for a birthday party. My cousin James and I went to do some sight seeing. We saw Time Square and the Brooklyn Bridge, got a run through of the metro system, and just did some catching up. We then went back to his apartment to meet up with his girlfriend to get dinner. We decided to get some Thai food. I was brave and tried the kalamari, and also had a really good beef dish. We had a nice bottle of merlot to go with the food.
The night concluded with another glass of wine and the movie, "Into the Wild." Rather befitting I thought, all about potentially reckless adventure. I am on an adventure indeed, and God has seen me through!
The next morning I got to sleep in a little bit. That was very much needed. I had a New York bagel for breakfast. Julia went to do the laundry and James and I went to do some shopping. I got a new power cord for my laptop, my forth one... ugh! We went to Staples and Circuit City, and even checked out Macy's. The New York life is definitely bigger than what I'm used to. I know this is an experience given to me directly by God. I'm excited to see where it takes me.
